Greetings denzines of the warp and fans of the Emperor alike, today we have a dual update.
First of, I want to remind everyone there is just over a week left in the Gravis Suscipio contest, so get your entries done already! We have a lot of fine submissions in the folder so far, but as the Billy Idol song goes, I cried "More! More! More!"
Also today, we have a special guest review of the Citadel Paint Range! Unless you've been living under a rock, you probably know that Games Workshop has drastically changed their paint range this friday, and presented us a whooping 145 colors in the new one. Our member and veteran painter gives us, given her years of experience i'll even dare say a very professional review of the paint range:
A Bela-take on the new Citadel Colours by Belazikkal
I had a chance to try them out at my local GW. The fringe benefits of being a long-time customer. Usually the painting tables are reserved for the newbies, but I got a chance to try them out.
The results from that hour or so of trying out the paints, mostly to get a handle on consistency etc. rather than hues, are what I am going to report here. I painted a Space Marine, Ultrasmurf.
I want it stated that I did not get the chance to dry out the new Glazes and the new Dry paints, but I did get a chance to look at them (as in seeing how the paint behaves) and having them explained.
Also, GW's website seems to have gone down crashing and burning due to overload.
Base: This is the successor to the Foundation series, and yet not. It is more fluid, requiring less water to be mixed into it before it being applied, and it has been expanded with metallics. They're all fairly dark/muted, though. No bright colours here. Boltgun Metal has gone the way of the dodo-bird, and is replaced with Leadbelcher. Chaos Black is now Abaddon Black and a Base colour, and Ceramite White is Skull White with a new name and better coverage. The funniest name in the new series of paints is XV-88 though, which is a Base of a dark ochre hue. Ideal for Tau, no doubt!
Layer: These are the closest to the old Citadel Paints. They are however, somewhat less covering, from what I experienced, ie more translucent. They also dry a bit fast. There is no black here, though there is a thinner white: White Scar. Easily the largest range. And there are several shades of pink now. And specific colours for you Dark Eldar in Kabalite Green and Sybarite Green. Not colour coded for your convenience but rather named for your convenience. Neat. The metallics are expanded upon, bringing back brass and copper.
Shade: Forget runny and uncomplying Washes, forcing you to liberally dunk your entire mini it for it to look decent. Shades are the new washes, really, but they are somewhat thinner (notice a theme?) and only shade and strengthen the colours. No badly looking rings when applying the paint, either. You can still wash your mini in it, and it'll come out MUCH darker for it, but it can be applied in the recesses only and look pretty good. The colour line is expanded upon and the new Badab Black is named Nuln Oil and the new Devlan Mud is named Agrax Earthshade.
Glazes: I did not get the chance to test these, sadly! But I was told they are extremely thin, and served to enrichen midtones and highlights and bring colours in blends together. Ie what I have to use the base colour for when I paint NMM now, and I have to make it manually. This, along with the shades, is a range I can imagine buying all of them just because they are VERY USEFUL! There's only 4 though. But those 4 are bright and for colours that can be hard to highlight, like green and yellow.
Dry: This is the one most speculated upon. Some though it was powder. It is not. I did not get to try it (sorry!), but it is very, very sticky. Like... uhm... it's not "goopey", but almost solid paint. It's extremely viscous, like honey. I won't pass verdict on this as I haven't had a chance to try it, but I will most likely pass these over for favour of old school drybrushing.
Texture: This I did get to try and my verdict is... meh. GW means to let people use this for basing needs. Not anything you can't do with sand and PVC glue before undercoating. Why would I want a colour pre-mixed with sand? I can see other uses for it though, in particular Blackfire Earth to create rusty bits on Orks, Skaven and Nurgle Marines. The Liquid Snow, by the name of Mourn Mountain Snow seems pretty rad, though. But overall, this is the most disappointing in the range. Nothing that you really con't do yourself with some technical knowhow and for a cheaper coin.
Finally, there's Technical, but I've tried none. They're the varnishe, the undercoat colours, the liquid greenstuff (which is harder to get your hands on than Venus' arms) and the medium. All in the, for the purpose, idiotic Citadel bottle.
My verdict?
Pretty decent stuff. They're the same price the old bottles, at least in Sweden. But they might contain less. I will NOT buy the Mega Paint set. Forget it with that price tag! Woo!
I play Iron Warriors. And I have a Dark Eldar army planned. I will most likely buy paint as I need it. I will stick with Vallejo Game Colour instead of Layers, keep my old Washes and Foundation close until they die or run out and then replace them with new Shades and Bases. That being said, I recommend Shades, Bases and Layers wholeheartedly!
This is daring by GW. They haven't done something this major to their paint set since the late 90s, when they switched to the last bottle design, a move during which they removed the old washes and glazes, as well as coloured metallics in favour of the not-fondly-remembered Inks line (ever tried manually varnishing a model with Citadel Ink applied? Yeah, then you know why they aren't fondly remembered, at least not by me).

After this fine review, i would just like to add that GW has posted a Color conversion chart between their old and their new paint lines. Here's the link to the PDF:
